From the high-speed trainset that started it all, to state-of-the-art high-speed multiple units, the face of German’s ICE network has been long-standing and iconic since the mid-1980s, but that face hasn’t always worn the standard white and red accents of the Deutsche Bahn. Many an ICE have carried special liveries throughout the years, but perhaps none are as striking and landmark as the Railbow ICE 3.

In recent years, a growing and fabulous tradition has been spreading across railway networks throughout Europe; the “trainbow”. Supporting pride, acceptance, and inclusivity, LGBTQIA+ railfans get to be represented by their favourite rail operators. In 2021, Deutsche Bahn joined in the celebration of love and progress by adding the pride flag as a stripe along the whole length of ICE 3 403 022/504, marking the 10th anniversary of Railbow, DB’s staff-led pride initiative.
