About this game

What this game is, in the developer's words

A roguelite chess RPG where your pieces don't stay as they are. Earn upgrades, unlock branching skill trees, and build your warband across runs as you fight through 10 boss encounters, each one rewriting the rules to take you apart.

Rogue Mate is a turn-based tactical roguelite built on the bones of chess, but your pieces don't stay as they are. As you fight through waves of enemies, your Pawns, Knights, Bishops, Rooks, and Queen earn upgrades, unlock special abilities, and evolve into something the board has never seen.

Build your warband your way. Spend Gold to recruit new pieces. Spend Essence to unlock permanent skill branches. Pick your starting formation, then shape each piece through branching upgrade paths. No two runs play the same. Do you push your Knight down a path of leaping strikes and shockwaves, or build a Rook that tears through everything in its lane? The choices compound fast.

Turn-based. Strategic. Brutal. Every move matters. Enemies advance from all sides, and one bad decision can collapse your entire formation. Positioning, piece synergy, and upgrade timing separate a good run from a legendary one.

Fight bosses that rewrite the rules. Ten boss encounters, each a different kind of nightmare, ending with the Omni King. Bleed out against 1000 Cuts, outwit The Jester, survive the Shadow Lord's fog, crack the Unbreakable, and unmask the False King. Then take on enemy Kings whose modifiers warp the board itself, freezing your pieces, poisoning the ground, and turning your own formation against you.

A staggering depth of customization. With 5 starting formations, 18 skill branches across your pieces, and 26 upgrades each offering multiple variants, the decisions compound fast. Swap one branch, take a different upgrade path, and the whole run changes shape.

Three ways to play:

  • Campaign — Battle through escalating boss fights, each with its own mechanics and twist.

  • Endless — No finish line. How long can you hold the board?

  • The Gauntlet — Every boss, back to back. You will not survive.

Then turn it up. Grandmaster difficulty is available on every mode, where each fight can field a second enemy King with its own modifier stacked on top.

Between runs, build at camp. Recruit pieces, unlock permanent upgrades, arrange your formation, and study the Codex, a growing compendium of every piece, upgrade, boss, and modifier you have discovered. Track your runs, kills, and personal bests in the Hall of Records, and spend Gold mid-run at the Travelling Merchant when fortune puts him on your path.
