Behind Gate is an Island

Fortunately, one of the cosmic oddities that caused the occasional opening of the gate to other worlds occurred on an island far enough away from the continental mainland. Volcanic activity between 1700 and 1250 B.C. likely triggered the initial opening of the gate. People have still been attempting to control the number of newcomers so far. The frequency with which the gate is opened varies significantly over time.
